Things to do
Vere Lodge is located in the small village of South Raynham near Fakenham, in North Norfolk which is a coastline Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which is a conservation area. There is something for everyone with special places to visit from stunning beaches to unique cultural and music events throughout the year near Vere Lodge. Including the impressive Ryanham Hall, Castle Acre and historical churches nearby. If there is anything you want to know we will try to help you.
Gardens
Beautiful gardens to visit in the area include Hindringham Hall Gardens (open Tuesdays 2pm to 5pm, Wednesdays 10am to 1pm to 5pm and Bank Holidays 10am to 1pm April to October). The gardens were shortlisted for the Christie’s Historic Houses Garden of the year award in 2020. There is a discount to visit if staying at Vere Lodge. Other gardens of note include East Ruston, Natural Surroundings and Pensthorpe. Or arrange a flower delivery from Country House Flowers or Scent with Love.
Eating In or Out
There are a number of fantastic and award winning pubs and restaurants nearby. Including The Brisley Bell, The Crown Inn, The Dabbling Duck and Sculthrope Mill all within 15 minutes. Other pubs at the coast include The Victoria at Holkham, The Hero at Burnham Overy and Morston Hall at Morston and The Ship at Brancaster among others depending on what you are looking for, and there is always Fish and Chips. Or try a cooking course in the next village at Hunters Academy of Food. The nearest essentials shop is a small garage 8 minutes walk from the house. Organising a supermarket delivery for when you arrive is always useful and there are large supermarkets in Fakenham and Swaffham. Beaches and Seaside Towns
Vere Lodge is perfectly located for exploring the stunning North Norfolk Beaches nearby including Holkham, Wells next-the-sea, Hunstanton and Brancaster. The charming seaside towns of Blakeney, Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Market are also nearby. Hire an e-bike or beach hut, or join the carnival at Wells-next-the-sea. Or swimming, paddle boarding, crabbing and other adventures await.
Local Crafts and Producers
There are some beautiful galleries, flavoursome things to discover in noteworthy farm shops and great antique shops in the towns and villages nearby. Including; the Textile Conservation Studio near Blickling, Mrs Temples Cheeses at Little Walsingham, raw milk and local cheese at The Little Dairy in Binham, Norfolk Lavender at Heacham, flour and antiques at the Letheringsett Watermill, strawberries from Sharringtons, glass blowing in Fakenham at Langham Glass or try some award winning local Norfolk wine. The nearest farm shops are Walsingham Farm Shop, Heath Farm Shop at Massingham and the Meadows Farm Shop near Sculthorpe.
Walking, Cycling and Sailing
There are walks from Vere Lodge and a number of well know or off the beaten track routes nearby including the fantastic Norfolk Coastal Path. OS Maps are available. Bring your bikes or hire them and have them delivered and collected with Norfolk Cycle Hire or rent Cockle Bay E-Bikes at Wells-next-the-sea. Or spend some time on the water on a paddle board with North Norfolk Paddle Boards or on a boat with Harbour Tours and Curlew Charters at Wells-next-the-Sea.
Birds, Seals and Wildlife
See the seals at Blakeney Point in the National Nature Reserve. Bird watching spots include the Titchwell Marsh National Nature Reserve (RSPB) and the Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorope Moor Nature Reserve. Or visit Watatunga for a Norfolk safari experience or the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
Golf, Horse Riding and Fishing
Golf courses include Championship links clubs at Sheringham and the Royal West Norfolk at Brancaster and other local courses. Ride at Holkham Beach and at the North Norfolk Riding Centre. Or book a fishing trip on the coast with Off the Hook or Norfolk Sea Fishing Trips.
Houses, Churches and Castles
Norfolk is spoilt with a number of castles, churches and stately homes who have fantastic exhibitions, concerts and events throughout the year. From Sandringham, Holkham Hall, Oxburgh Hall, Blickling, Felbrigg Hall and Houghton Hall to Castle Rising, Castle Acre and Norwich Castle to the beautiful churches on your doorstep and elsewhere. Visit Walsingham or try the the Five Churches Festival and North Norfolk Music Festival. There is always somewhere to discover.
Towns and Villages
The Georgian town of Fakenham is 4 miles away and Holt nearby. The historical cathedral and minster towns of Norwich and Kings Lynn are also near. If it’s a wet day Fakenham has a cinema and bowling, and Wells-next-the-sea has a great cultural centre and steam railway. Other places of interest nearby include the village of Castle Acre and its priory.
